The School of Architecture is pleased to share that Andrew Mondschein, Associate Professor of Urban + Environmental Planning and Associate Dean of Research, has assumed a visiting professor role at the University of Bologna’s Department of Architecture for the 2025–26 academic year, while on a one-year leave from UVA.

Mondschein, PhD AICP, is a scholar of transportation systems and travel behavior whose research advances equitable, sustainable accessibility in cities and regions. His work investigates the evolving landscape of transportation and information technologies, with a particular emphasis on how information and knowledge can strengthen individual and community capacity to shape mobility. At the School of Architecture, he teaches courses in transportation planning, land use, and urban environments, as well as methods courses for master’s and doctoral students.

During his appointment at the University of Bologna, Mondschein will lead a seminar titled “Cities of Choice: Daily Mobility, Democracy, and Technology” and collaborate with colleagues on research addressing the urban digital twin being developed to inform planning and policy decisions in Bologna. This digital twin—a simulation that integrates big data and machine learning to model Bologna’s transportation, housing, energy, and environmental systems—will serve as the basis for Mondschein’s focus on embedding ethical and democratic frameworks into the technology, with particular attention to daily travel and wellbeing.

In addition to his teaching and research in Bologna, Mondschein is helping to coordinate a broader partnership between the University of Bologna and the University of Virginia. This initiative, led by the UVA Digital Technology and Democracy Lab at the Karsh Institute of Democracy, brings together faculty from Architecture, Data Science, the College of Arts & Sciences, and other units across the University to advance shared research and teaching at the intersection of technology and democratic practice.
