Launched in 2018, Virginia by Design's awards program recognizes visionary thinking and patronage in the design fields to broaden the appreciation for architecture and design throughout the state of Virginia. Annually through the program, The Branch Museum of Architecture and Design based in Richmond honors an extraordinary emerging designer among other categories of awards. This year, the VAxDesign Emerging Designer Award is presented to Kyle Schumann, Assistant Professor of Architecture and co-director of Before Building Laboratory.

This award honors a designer, not yet licensed or professionally certified, who demonstrates an exemplary level of excellence in design execution and a dedication to advancing the discipline.

Schumann's body of work is aimed at advancing sustainable construction methods through the development and leveraging of accessible, democratized technologies deployed to understand, evaluate, and make strategic use of natural materials. His work has been supported by institutions including the American Institute of Architects and the Center for Architecture, and has been published in venues including ACADIA, CAADRIA, ARCC, and ACSA.

This year's winners will be honored at an awards ceremony at The Branch Museum on Friday, October 18, 2024.
