Tidelands is a collaborative project between the University of Virginia's Natural Infrastructure Lab (NIL), the University of Pennsylvania, and Auburn University, working with the processes, forms, and materials of a place (its nature) for infrastructure purposes. Through studies sited in select bays and estuaries on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, Tidelands will produce place-specific natural infrastructure design concepts; studies of how those design concepts function according to key criteria, and documented procedures for devising innovative forms of natural infrastructure.
The NIL has been focused on the Outer Banks of North Carolina for the past year. The team has been working closely with the U.S. National Fish + Wildlife Service in three refuges to propose innovative concepts for a growing list of challenges they face. Take a deep dive into the exploration, process, and outcomes of the project as the exhibition outlines the full spectrum of what goes into challenging the status quo for our changing coastal environments.
