STUDENT SUPPORT
The School of Architecture’s Director of Financial Aid, Carolyn Buchanan, helps students navigate the financial aid process and personal finance through information sessions and individual advising appointments. Prospective, admitted, and continuing students are encouraged to contact the Director of Financial Aid with questions related to tuition and funding, including the following topics:

SCHEDULE AN ADVISING APPOINTMENT WITH CAROLYN
UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS
UVA meets 100% of undergraduate students' demonstrated financial need through a combination of scholarships, grants, federal work-study, and need-based loans. Learn more about UVA’s commitment to need-based financial aid.
In addition to need-based aid awarded by the University, the School of Architecture awards merit-based scholarships to undergraduate students who meet select criteria. Learn more about School of Architecture administered undergraduate scholarships here.
GRADUATE STUDENTS
All graduate applicants are considered for merit-based aid by the School of Architecture as part of the application review process. There are no separate aid applications for entering graduate students. Admitted students selected to receive merit aid are notified in their offer of admission letters. Merit aid awarded at the time of admission is guaranteed for the duration of the recipient’s period of study provided the student maintains full-time enrollment and good academic standing. In many cases, graduate merit aid is funded through privately endowed fellowships. Graduate students selected to receive merit aid are matched with endowed funding sources upon enrollment based on their qualifications and the awarding criteria. Students matched to an endowed fellowship will receive written notification of their selection.
DOCTORAL STUDENTS
PhD funding includes full coverage of tuition, required fees, and single-user health insurance for the duration of the 5-year program. Students also receive direct funding through stipends and/or Graduate Assistantship wages depending on their program year.
TRAVEL FUNDING
INDEPENDENT RESEARCH TRAVEL FUNDING

STUDY ABROAD FUNDING
School of Architecture students participating in School of Architecture Study Abroad programs may apply for School of Architecture Study Abroad Funding. Study Abroad Funding application deadlines correspond with the program application deadlines. Learn more about study abroad funding.
CONFERENCE FUNDING
Students selected to present their research at a professional conference or similar event may apply on a rolling basis for School of Architecture Conference Travel Funding to help offset the cost of registration fees and conference travel related expenses. Learn more and apply.
OTHER SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
The Academic Support Fund was created by the School of Architecture Foundation to assist students with out-of-pocket costs that challenge the pursuit of academic excellence in the studio and the classroom. Students may apply for funding annually during the spring semester. Learn more about the Academic Support Fund.
The Bevin and Vito Cetta Scholarship provides financial support to one or more graduate students who will be enrolled in their final year in the School of Architecture. Eligible students may apply during the spring semester preceding their final program year; recipients are selected based on stated need. Learn more and apply.
School of Architecture Emergency Funding provides financial support for students who need assistance with unexpected, unforeseen, and unavoidable emergency expenses. Students may apply for emergency funding throughout the academic year by submitting the Hoo Needs Help application. Please note that the School of Architecture prioritizes students who may not be eligible for funding administered through Hoo Needs Help; students are encouraged to apply even if they believe they will not qualify for Hoo Needs Help funding.
ADDITIONAL FINANCIAL SUPPORT AT UVA
Accommodations Access Fund provides funding up to $2,000 for students who are applying for Student Disability Access Center (SDAC) accommodations and are unable to cover expenses related to specialists and testing. Funds can be used for equipment related to disability (insulin pumps, hearing aids, wheelchair, etc.), disability treatment, therapy or psychiatric visits, disability testing, etc. Learn More and apply.
Care and Support Services Honor Loan of up to $1500 per semester available for all students who are in good academic standing and good financial standing. Learn more and apply.
GradBridge Loan provides support to doctoral students transitioning from fellowship stipends to wage assistantships or other related employment statuses. Learn more and apply.
Health Insurance Expense Request Form allows students to pay the cost of the Student UVA Student Health Plan by taking out an education loan. The loan will be listed as an Institutional Loan on the student's financial aid, and payment on the loan does not begin until after the student graduates or otherwise leaves the University. Students should complete the Health Insurance Expense Request Form from the Student Financial Services forms directory for the appropriate academic year.
Hoo Needs Help centralized emergency financial assistance program that exists to support students who need assistance with unexpected, unforeseen, and unavoidable emergency expenses. These may be expenses related to situations such as accidents, illness, theft, natural disasters, and food or housing insecurity. Learn More and Apply.
One-Time Computer Expense allows students to request an adjustment to their cost of attendance for the purchase of a computer (maximum is $3,000). Students should complete the One-Time Computer Expense Request Form from the Student Financial Services forms directory for the appropriate academic year.
Student Financial Services Short-Term Emergency Loan a short-term, interest-free loan available to undergraduate and graduate. The loan is due on the last day of the month after it is taken out (e.g. a loan taken out any day in February will be due March 31). As long as it is paid on time, there is no fee or interest.
