ARTIST'S ASSISTANT + VIDEOGRAPHER - STUDENT RESEARCH ASSISTANT (SRA)

Professor Sanda Iliescu seeks two SRAs to assist her to paint large abstract watercolors on 30 x 22 inches paper. One or both assistants will create a video of the painting process. The paintings will be part of a large public art installation for the upcoming Vision and Practice of Forest Urbanism symposium on October 23 and 24, 2025.
Primary responsibilities
- Attend painting sessions during which the SRAs and Professor Iliescu will paint together
- Record the painting process and create a video to be posted on the Forest Urbanism website

POSSIBILITIES IN PULP - STUDENT RESEARCH ASSISTANT (SRA)

Before Building Laboratory Co-director Kyle Schumann is hiring several Student Research Assistants (SRAs) to work on The Jefferson Trust-funded project "Possibilities in Pulp: Reusing Paper Waste on Grounds." The project will pilot and scale methods to repurpose the over half a million square feet of paper printed annually in Campbell Hall through the production of model making materials and other functional paper pulp design objects.
Primary responsibilities
- Refinement and scaling of pulp processing techniques
- Sourcing and setting up of pulp processing equipment
- Documentation and communication of pulp processing methods through the design and layout of instructional materials
- Design, production, and testing of pulp materials and design objects

RURAL CHURCH DOCUMENTATION & ENGAGEMENT - STUDENT RESEARCH ASSISTANT (SRA)

This position will be responsible for landscape documentation, oral history program support, and ArcGIS map creation for the Center for Cultural Landscape’s partner organization-Pine Grove AMMD. This position will assist Pine Grove AMMD leadership with documenting four historic churches within a Rural Historic District in Cumberland County, VA.
Primary responsibilities
- This position will assist Pine Grove AMMD leadership with documenting four historic churches within a Rural Historic District in Cumberland County, VA.
- The materials created will help support the ongoing documentation of historic communities and their remaining anchor institutions in Central Virginia.
- The student research assistant will work directly with the non-profit’s volunteer staff and a local historic preservation professional to identify relevant archives, review land records to determine whether new parcels were acquired, geographical and cultural constraints(context), review and integrate relevant denominational histories, and engage with church historians to assess ways to support their heritage conservation efforts at each church.
- The final project will be an in-depth history of one of the churches, incorporating the other three into a single StoryMap, which can be expanded to include additional churches in the future.
- Some interviewing and oral history recording may be included in the documentation process.

CHARLOTTESVILLE-ALBEMARLE RAIL STUDY - STUDENT RESEARCH ASSISTANT (SRA)
As populations and densities increase in the region, rail transit, primarily operating east-west between eastern Albemarle county, through Charlottesville, to Crozet is becoming a real possibility. This position would support a preliminary assessment of the opportunities for rail transit in region. SRAs will work with Prof. Andrew Mondschein on this project.
Primary responsibilities
- Assembling reviews of existing planning for rail in the region
- Researching and documenting precedents in similar regions
- Reviewing potential rail technologies
- Developing a set of initial recommendations

LANDSCAPE AND TEXTILE DESIGN - STUDENT RESEARCH ASSISTANT (SRA)
The School of Architecture seeks a motivated graduate research assistant to support a faculty-led design project at the intersection of fashion and textile design, camouflage, local Piedmont plant communities, and land relations. This work explores how designers can cultivate deeper and more meaningful relations with the landscapes we collectively inhabit, with a particular lens of contemporary camouflage trends. The assistantship also includes short-term support on proofreading and final corrections for an upcoming edited volume, Atlas of Green Energy Transitions.
Primary responsibilities
- Conduct research on fashion and textile precedents, camouflage, and cultural/ecological histories of plant communities in the Piedmont region.
- Assist with design explorations, material studies, and representation of ideas.
- Participate in field observation and documentation of local ecologies.
- Provide proofreading and editorial assistance for Atlas of Green Energy Transitions (~2 weeks).

THE LEARNING BARGE DIGITAL ARCHIVE INTERN
Robin Dunbar, PhD, is seeking one or more interns to help with a project establishing a digital archive of the Learning Barge, an award-winning architectural project, developed over a decade ago in collaboration with Professor of Architecture Phoebe Crisman. Dunbar is currently an Environmental Sustainability and Resilience Fellow with the UVA Environmental Institute (Learn more about this project and her role with UVA EI).
Intern(s) can work remotely with frequent check-ins with Dr. Dunbar via Zoom and can start as early as September 15. BISCUIT RUN PARK INSTALLATIONS - STUDENT RESEARCH ASSISTANT (SRA)
The project will support the design and installation of several site-specific installations and multifunctional gathering spaces for Biscuit Run Park, a new public park in Albemarle County, VA
Primary responsibilities:
- Translating Design Drawings: Convert architectural design drawings into detailed plans for fabrication, assembly, and installation of small-scale structures
- Pre-fabrication and Assembly: Assist in the pre-fabrication, assembly, and installation of full-scale structures
- Code Review Preparation: Compile and prepare materials required for code review submissions, ensuring compliance with local regulations (Site Plan Revision, Building Permits, etc.)
- Collaboration Documentation: Prepare detailed documents for collaboration with structural engineers, including specifications and technical requirements

The Communications Office at the School of Architecture is seeking 1-2 students to join the team as social media assistant(s). The SSA will work closely with the A-School’s Creative Director of Communications to highlight and celebrate the School’s academics, research, and student life.

- Curation of student work for social media from end-of-semester submissions housed on Box/shared server
- Outreach to students to request student work for social media (including graphic collateral, descriptions, credits), inclusive of coursework and research
- Creation (and revisions) of social media posts, primarily focused on students
- Development of social media videos that show and celebrate student life beyond the classroom
- Manage a communication posting calendar in coordination with the Comms Team

A-SCHOOL EXHIBITIONS STUDENT ASSISTANT (SSA)
Kyle Sturgeon seeks to add 2-3 students to a diverse team of exhibitions assistants. SSAs will work together to execute the exhibitions scheduled for both fall and spring semesters in collaboration with external guests, faculty, and staff.
Primary responsibilities:
- Install and de-install all scheduled internal and external exhibitions at the School of Architecture.
- Serve as stewards to gallery spaces for public events
- Serve as a liaison to your cohort to solicit programming/exhibit ideas
Time commitment and availability
Academic Year 25-26, (optional) Summer 2026; An average of 6 hours a week can be expected, but there is often additional work available.

Undergraduate and Graduate Students
Pay Rate
$16/hr. (undergraduate); $18/hr. (graduate)
Preferred experience and skills
- Interest/experience in the design, curation, and installation of gallery installations is an asset
- General proficiency and/or desire to learn hand tool operation and FabLab skills is appreciated
- Excellent organization and attention to detail, a focus on craft, and an interest in enriching A-School culture are critical aspects of the role
