Biography
Shubhayan Ukil is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Virginia’s School of Architecture, working with Associate Professor Andrew Mondschein in the Department of Urban and Environmental Planning.
His research examines how emerging transportation technologies can improve access to places, particularly for marginalized communities, by using a behavioral lens to promote socially just and sustainable transportation systems. He studies travel decision-making as a complex process shaped by the dynamic relationship between individuals and their surrounding built environment. Shubhayan’s doctoral dissertation investigated the socio-spatial impacts of app-based ride-hailing services, analyzing how these services reshape the destination choices of marginalized groups. Taking a comparative lens, his research explored these dynamics in both Chicago, United States, and Bengaluru, India. Currently, he is working on a project exploring how Connected and Autonomous Vehicle (CAV) systems can improve access for marginalized groups in flood-prone and rural areas in Virginia. He uses a mixed-methods approach in his work to work with transportation planners in resolving transportation issues.
He holds a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Michigan, a Master’s degree in Urban Planning and Policy from the University of Illinois Chicago, and a Bachelor's degree in Planning from the School of Planning and Architecture, Vijayawada. He also has a Graduate Certificate in Data Science from the Michigan Institute for Data Science.
