Biography

Ian Klein is a real estate development professional based in New York City, where he serves as Head of Development for Rabina Properties, a third-generation family-owned real estate investment and development and management firm which owns over seven million square feet of apartment houses, office buildings, retail properties, and industrial sites throughout the country. At Rabina, Ian directs and oversees all aspects of project development, design and construction across the Rabina portfolio. Prior to joining Rabina Properties, Ian led the conceptualization and execution of real estate development projects for Corigin Development, and Macklowe Properties. Ian has also served in the public sector through the New York City Economic Development Corporation where he was involved with structuring and facilitating some of New York City’s largest public-private development projects. Throughout his career, Ian has collaborated with architects such as Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Foster + Partners, KPF, Deborah Berke & Partners, and many others to develop and deliver projects that achieve excellence in design while mitigating risk, optimizing costs, and generating significant financial value.

At UVA, Ian teaches the capstone course in the real estate development certificate sequence which explores the conceptualization of a real estate development project from raw land through a fully flushed out design and development investment thesis. The course also addresses issues of urbanistic, ecological, and community impact inherent in the development process. Ian is also an instructor in the foundation architecture studio sequence where he serves as a roving critic covering topics of public-private development, urbanism, and housing.
