Biography

Chris Ripple teaches undergraduate- and graduate-level law courses in the Department of Urban and Environmental Planning.  Prior to joining the faculty in the School of Architecture, Ripple practiced law with Sidley Austin and McGuireWoods, where he was trained as a litigator before focusing his practice on regulatory compliance in the food, transportation, and food logistics industries.  Ripple has expertise in helping clients assess and plan for risks across supply chains and at an industrial scale, and he has trained both industry professionals and government personnel.  In previous teaching experience, Ripple taught food systems law and policy at the University of Virginia School of Law, a course that explored how laws have shaped the industrialization of the food and agricultural sectors, with important ramifications for the environment, public health, and local economies.

Ripple received his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he was the editor-in-chief of the Virginia Journal of International Law. He received his undergraduate degree in English from the University of Notre Dame, where he graduated summa cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.  Prior to his legal career, Ripple was a case manager at the Marjorie Kovler Center, a nonprofit organization in Chicago that provides social, medical, and forensic services to survivors of officially sanctioned torture from across the world.
