Andrew Spears

FABRICATION LAB TECHNICIAN AND SAWMILLING COORDINATOR

Education

MLA, UVA School of Architecture, 2020; BS Applied Biophysics, College of William and Mary, 2017

Biography

Andrew enjoys helping students solve their fabrication questions, especially if made of wood. Sharp tools, an efficient process, and the right materials usually make for the best results. He draws on a background of interdisciplinary involvements to approach problem solving, landscape readings, and material processing. A few of his favorite builds include a 1:3 scale model of the Rotunda Dome in white oak, a 24’x8’ CNC foam model of California’s Central Valley, and two tables for the School of Architecture’s Outdoor Classroom from a Tulip Poplar tree by Alderman Library.  During his MLA degree, Andrew began developing the UVA Sawmilling project (uvasawmilling.com) which continues to provide free lumber to students across Grounds from fallen UVA trees.
