FANZONE TRAVEL AWARD

ABOUT THE AWARD

The Fanzone Award for Traveling Craftivism was founded in 2016 in memory of Carmen Fanzone (BSArch 2009) by his friends, family and classmates. It is an opportunity for one student to travel to a location of their choosing to perform a summer independent study. The intent of the Fanzone Travel Award is to support students that focus on the use of indigenous materials, local construction and fabrication practices, and issues of sustainability and equity in communities they feel are underserved by design. The Fanzone Awardee must exemplify virtues that were unique to Carmen — a dedication to building communities through design and the genuine generosity and thoughtful enthusiasm he shared with those he encountered. Carmen had a kindness, a genuine interest in others, and an ease with which he made friends that made him a unifying force, and for all of these reasons, he will be missed dearly. The Fanzone Travel Award recipient is expected to share their gained experiences and scholarship with students and faculty of the School of Architecture during the following academic year.

ABOUT CARMEN

Carmen Fanzone was prolific in his creative output and the breadth of his interests, enthusiasm for his friends, family, and colleagues was boundless. He is fondly remembered by his peers for the thoughtfulness with which he approached his projects, the abundance of sketches which he produced to explore and explain his ideas, and the craft with which he executed his designs. Among his many interests, travel held a special place in his heart. While at UVA, Carmen traveled to Scandinavia, participating in the travel abroad program in Copenhagen, and to Ecuador with a student group, forging meaningful relationships with both the places and people. After graduating, Carmen returned to work with a former professor in Copenhagen, traveled to Argentina to work on a speculative project with a friend, to Cuba to manage the construction of a temporary restaurant he designed while working professionally in New York City, and back to Ecuador to work on a series of projects designed in collaboration with friends both in the States and in Ecuador. He passed away unexpectedly in August 2016.
