An Atlas of Italian Gardening Practices
Gardens require continuous care, yet in Italy funding heavily favours one-off restoration projects over ongoing maintenance, leading to the gradual loss of gardeners’ hands-on, tacit knowledge. The research focuses on the practices that sustain Italian historic and fine gardens, exploring the relationships between conservation, design, and maintenance.
Francesco Cecchetti is a gardener and landscape architect who has taught landscape design and gardening. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Design Techniques for Landscape and Gardens and a Master’s in Landscape Architecture from Sapienza University of Rome. He is currently a PhD Student in Constructed Environment at the University of Virginia.
