Q: Do I need my own computer? What are the requirements?

A: Yes, you are required to provide your own personal computer. Specific hardware and software requirements, and computer specifications are posted on the School of Architecture’s website here

Q: Does the School of Architecture have a certain emphasis (i.e. architecture, sustainability, green design, etc.)?

A: All programs in the school are well-rounded, and each has its own strengths. Our faculty and students are notable for their commitment to critically addressing the most pressing challenges of our times - urbanization, climate change, social justice and more - through the lens of design, architecture, planning, history and culture - addressed both locally and globally. Cultural, economic, ecological and social issues are addressed directly by our faculty and students through acts of thinking and making. At UVA School of Architecture theory and practice are combined, rather than distanced and students are asked to consider the ethical dimensions of the built environment. Students develop skills in a diverse set of representational techniques, fabrication processes, communication and analysis tools. They are taught both leadership and collaborative skills with a focus on the impact of design through coursework and directed research.

Q: Am I required to complete foreign language courses as a School of Architecture student?

A: Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Architectural History are required to complete two (2) years of a foreign language. Students with an interest in foreign languages and who are enrolled in either the Bachelor of Science Architecture or the Bachelor of Urban + Environmental Planning are encouraged to complete study in another language as part of their general education requirements.  The course requirements for all undergraduate degree paths are available in the UVA Undergraduate Record.

Q: Will I have the opportunity to take classes outside of the School of Architecture?

A: Yes. In addition to the variety of required general education courses that you complete outside of the School of Architecture, many of our students pursue minors or double-majors in other disciplines. We believe the cross-disciplinary focus of our students makes them better architects, designers, planners, and historians. Consult with your academic advisor to determine appropriate course selection.

Q: As a first-year student, how long does it typically take to get to class every morning?

A: You would most likely be walking to Campbell Hall from your dorm which may vary in terms of distance and time and  can range from 15 to 25 minutes, however, the University Transit System runs frequently, which can decrease the travel time and protect you from rain or snow (depending on the time of year). It is very easy to thrive without a car around Grounds and the Charlottesville area.

Q: Is it possible to be involved with programs outside of the School of Architecture?

A: Absolutely! Our students are very engaged in activities outside of the School of Architecture. UVA offers hundreds of clubs and organizations with diverse focus interests. Visit Hoos Involved to see a comprehensive list of opportunities that await you.

Additionally, we find that many of our students form a very tight-knit community within the A-School and participate in the many school-related Student Organizations.

Q: What kind of jobs would I be prepared for immediately following the completion of my Bachelor of Science Architecture degree?

A: Students with a Bachelor of Science Architecture degree work in a variety of professions. Many work in a registered architect’s office as an employee or intern before continuing on to graduate school to pursue a Master of Architecture or Master of Landscape Architecture degree. Other career pathways that student pursue are in graphic design, website design, 3-D visualization and animation, industrial design and construction fields. Regardless of the path you choose, the Bachelor of Science Architecture degree at UVA combines a strong liberal arts foundation with an innovative design background. Our students develop strong critical thinking skills, artistic ability and creative expression, material and making knowledge, excellent research skills, and a rigorous work ethic – all of which are characteristics valued by employers.

WINTER EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM

On the tail end of UVA’s winter break in January, School of Architecture students are given the opportunity to shadow or have a short working experience with employers across the United States as part of the Winter Externship Program. As a short experience, the Winter Externship Program is intended to aid students in their career exploration efforts, networking abilities, and act as a resume booster before internship, job, or fellowship application periods in the spring. Through participating in externships, students learn more about individual organizations, their own field of interest, and how a career path may or may not work for their future plans.

In the fall semester, employers volunteer to host (virtually or in-person) one or more students for the January term through the Career Development Office and plan to have the students shadow them for up to one week or take on a smaller project for pay that can be completed over a maximum of two weeks.

In early October, once enough employers have been recruited, the Career Development Office posts an all-call application through Handshake for School of Architecture students (undergraduate and graduate) in all areas of study. Based on employer and student preferences, the Career Development Office matches employers and students for the Winter Externship Program starting in November and matches continue to be made through December 1st for the January term.

If you are interested in participating in the Winter Externship Program as an employer host or have questions as a student, please contact Lindsay Schiller at lms7yk@virginia.edu.

HOW DOES THE EXTERNSHIP MATCHING PROCESS WORK?

As part of the application process, students can be expected to submit a resume (1 page allowed for undergraduates, 2 pages allowed for graduates) and short work sample (up to 4 pages) that will be given in a packet to employers. Students will choose and submit their top 10 employers of interest for the Winter Externship Program, keeping in mind that many of the employers prefer an in-person experience.

Once the application has closed, employers will get a compiled packet of application materials submitted by students most interested in their firms. Employers will review these materials and submit their own rankings to the Career Development Office identifying the students with whom they would most like to be matched. After rankings have been received, the Career Development Office will best match students and employers based on all materials and preferences. Students will be notified of their match over Fall Break with a deadline for returning signed waivers and acceptance into the program.

PORTFOLIO/RESUME REVIEWS

Periodically throughout the academic year, the Career Development Office will organize reviews where faculty, alumni, and/or employer volunteers provide feedback on student portfolios and/or resumes. These reviews are timed throughout the semester so that students can receive helpful tips for improvement before application periods or career fairs on Grounds, and are opportunities for students to gain valuable networking time with respected mentors.

Regularly scheduled reviews include faculty portfolio reviews that occur once a semester and employer portfolio reviews that take place as part of our Spring Career Connect Week. If you work in a design field or on hiring teams for your organization and would like to volunteer your time to critique student portfolios or resumes, please contact Lindsay Schiller at lms7yk@virginia.edu.

SPRING CAREER CONNECT WEEK AT THE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

The Spring Career Connect Week acts as focused week of scheduled events developed for student to explore professional development opportunities and build skillsets. Every day of the week, at least one professional activity or hiring event is hosted with mindfulness of accommodating every student academic area within the School of Architecture. Descriptions of our typical programs are shared below:

LUNCH & LEARNS

Lunch & Learns are 1 - 1.5 hour sessions for students that are hosted by employers or alumni focused on the work of a firm/organization and its culture, or more broadly, career paths and opportunities. Held on Grounds (most typically at the A-School), hosting organizations often provide a mid-day meal for students in attendance.

SMALL GROUP NETWORKING

Apart from the tabling event of the larger Spring Career Connect Fair, students and employer representatives are invited to attend smaller lunches or gatherings of less than 75 people. These smaller groups accommodate more time allotted for each employer representative and student to interface in a low pressure environment.

PORTFOLIO/RESUME REVIEWS

Employers attending the Spring Career Connect Fair are invited to attend a dinner on the evening prior to the event and participate in portfolio/resume review sessions for School of Architecture students. For this program, employers volunteer 2 hours of time to review candidates through an individual appointment format. Students can use the feedback to make minor, last-minute edits to their materials before the Fair the following day, or for any future internship or employment applications throughout the spring semester and beyond. Organizational representatives receive a list of participating students with whom they will be meeting in advance of the event.

SPRING CAREER CONNECT FAIR

The Spring Career Connect Fair is an employer tabling event in which organizational representatives come to Grounds to chat with students about their hiring capabilities for summer internships or full-time opportunities. Students approach any table of their choosing with resumes and/or portfolios in hand to pitch themselves for open roles or to gain more insight into the organizational structure and culture of a firm. To provide the best attendance ratio for networking touch points between firms and students, participation is limited to approximately 40 employers (or less). In order to best meet the needs of students and to maximize attendance, the event takes place in the evening (post-studio).

If you are interested in participating in Spring Career Connect Week as an employer or a student, please contact Lindsay Schiller at lms7yk@virginia.edu.

To contend with the complex and evolving character of the constructed environment, the PhD in the Constructed Environment engages with these issues from technical, material, policy, and theoretical perspectives. We invite you to join us in questioning the constructed environment: what it is, how it functions, where it’s headed, and the ways we might join in to understand and shape it. The program seeks to explore the physio-socio-ecological systems, connections, and manifestations that form the constructed environment by supporting advanced research in topics that engage one or more of the Architecture’s School’s four disciplines: Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban and Environmental Planning, and Architectural History. The program fosters scholarship that identifies and researches emerging multidisciplinary issues across the globe and at every scale. The application package must demonstrate applicant's abilities to engage with these issues through advancing independent research and collaboration with faculty, and through a clear sense of original contribution to knowledge in the constructed environment.

The admissions process at the University of Virginia School of Architecture is designed to build an extraordinary community of students who will thrive in a collegial and academically rigorous environment and go on to become responsible leaders, public servants, and successful members of their desired professions. To that end, we seek an entering class of forward thinking students who exemplify the qualities of resilience, integrity, empathy, diligence, maturity and the ability to engage across differences. At the most basic level, our goal is to understand each applicant as a person, and to evaluate the unique path that led them to apply to UVA. Our evaluation criteria are holistic and necessarily assess all components of the application.

We consider intellectual aptitude and academic achievement, as well as individual life experiences, obstacles overcome, contributions through service and leadership, a unique worldview, demonstrations of strength of character, the nature and quality of any work experience, military service, and an applicant’s potential to contribute to and succeed at the School of Architecture. Understanding each story will enable us to offer admission to students who will thrive and contribute to the experience of those around them. We are committed to welcoming, in the words of our University mission statement, “talented students from all walks of life,” and will continue to do our best to be a welcoming and inclusive community — one that values the unique gifts of our students and, above all, cares for them as individuals. We do not consider an applicant’s race, financial need or family history with UVA as part of the admissions decision.

The 2026 graduate application is now open.

The School of Architecture will consider the scores and interview portion in conjunction with TOEFL/IELTS scores, but the Duolingo results will not replace or substitute for TOEFL/IELTS scores.

Your portfolio demonstrates experience and exploration in the areas of design, craft, creative thinking and all forms of making. All MArch and MLA applicants are required to submit an electronic portfolio as part of the online application.

Applicants to the Master of Architectural History and Master of Urban + Environmental Planning programs do not submit portfolios unless they are interested in pursuing the Urban Design Certificate.

DIRECT ADMIT POLICY

UVA School of Architecture is home to four closely related departments — architecture, architectural history, landscape architecture, and urban + environmental planning.  With access to a wide range of coursework and engagement across these disciplines, undergraduate students at the School of Architecture gain a broad understanding of design and the built environment. The School's highly reputed undergraduate programs (Architecture, Architectural History, and Urban + Environmental Planning) are rooted in creative and intellectual acts of design, making, research, scholarship, and engagement.

If you are currently a high school student (first-year) or college student enrolled outside of UVA (external transfer) exploring the wealth of opportunities that await you at the School of Architecture, read here for tips about applying:

STEP 1:

Regardless of whether you are just beginning your college search, or you are now in the process of applying, complete the UVA STUDENT INQUIRY FORM and be sure to indicate your Academic Interest as Architecture, Architectural History, or Urban + Environmental Planning. Completing this form allows us to know of your interest in the School of Architecture so we can invite you to special events designed specifically for prospective School of Architecture students.

STEP 2:

Connect with the School of Architecture through one of our many activities for prospective undergraduate students posted on our VISIT US page.

STEP 3:

Subscribe to NOTES from PEABODY, a blog maintained by the Office of Undergraduate Admission that provides relevant and timely information on the application process.

STEP 4:

All first-year and external transfer applicants to UVA School of Architecture submit their applications through the OFFICE OF UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSION. Be sure to visit their website for detailed information regarding application deadlines, the admission process, and much more.

STEP 5:

For transfer applicants to the Bachelor of Science Architecture program only, curate your portfolio. The portfolio for transfer applicants to the BS Architecture degree program is a valuable part of the application process and helps us to understand your creativity and visual communications skills. View the PORTFOLIO GUIDELINES FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS for additional details.

Note: First-Year applicants to the School of Architecture no longer submit work samples or portfolios as part of their applications. Students should use the university essays to express their creativity and interest in pursuing study in the School of Architecture.

EXTERNAL TRANSFER APPLICANTS:

Credit for courses fulfilling general requirements taken outside of UVA is routinely given if the courses are determined to be equivalent to courses offered at UVA. Core courses within the School of Architecture curriculum may not be eligible for transfer credit. In some circumstances, courses from other schools of architecture may be determined to satisfy program requirements. Department of Architecture degree students will not receive credit for drafting or computer drafting courses previously completed.

Contact Maya Drake, Academic Advisor, with additional questions about transferring.

Note: The School of Architecture welcomes applications from students enrolled outside of UVA for fall entry only.

If you are currently enrolled at UVA in a program other than one in the School of Architecture and are interested in majoring in a discipline offered at the A-School, or you are currently enrolled in the School of Architecture and wish to change majors, read here for tips about transferring:

STEP 1:

Schedule an advising meeting with Tashana Starks, Director of Advising + Academic Support as soon as you discover your interest in transferring into the School of Architecture. The Director of Advising + Academic Support will discuss your transfer options and will assist you with advising and course selection.

STEP 2:

The internal transfer application is entirely electronic and all materials, with the exception of letters of recommendation, must be submitted by the applicant as part of the TRANSFER APPLICATION.

+ SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE TRANSFER APPLICATION PORTAL

+ LETTER OF INTENT (1 page max.): Describe your motivations for transferring to the School of Architecture, and your major of interest (Architectural History, Architecture, or Urban + Environmental Planning).

+ TRANSCRIPT: Upload a current academic advising transcript printed from your SIS account to the TRANSFER APPLICATION.

+ LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION: Indicate on the TRANSFER APPLICATION the names of the two (2) people that you will ask to submit recommendations on your behalf.

Provide each recommender with the RECOMMENDATION UPLOAD link. Recommendation requests will not be automatically generated based on the information provided in the TRANSFER APPLICATION.

Note: Letters of recommendation are due by the application deadline. Applicants are strongly encouraged to provide recommenders with the RECOMMENDATION UPLOAD link at least 2 weeks in advance of the application deadline so that recommenders have adequate time to submit their letters.

We strongly recommend that one recommendation comes from a School of Architecture faculty member in the program into which the student is seeking to transfer. The second letter of recommendation can be from a teaching assistant from the School of Architecture or a UVA faculty member outside the School of Architecture.

+ DIGITAL PORTFOLIO (Bachelor of Science — Architecture applicants only): Submit a digital portfolio of no more than 10 pages of graphic work (PDF format; 15MB limit).

View our PORTFOLIO GUIDELINES for additional details.

Note: We highly recommended that at least one course be completed in the desired School of Architecture program before submitting an application to transfer to that program.

FINANCIAL AID

Two hundred years ago, UVA was founded on a powerful idea: that the next great leaders, thinkers and innovators could come from all walks of life. UVA and the School of Architecture remain committed to this ideal, with a financial aid model that makes a top education affordable to all U.S. students:

+ UVA accepts students solely on their academic merit, regardless of their ability to pay.

+ UVA meets 100% of your financial need. As long as students apply by the annual March 1st deadline, UVA will meet 100% of their demonstrated financial need through a combination of grants, federal work-study and federal need-based loans.

+ UVA limits your debt. We limit need-based loans to an average of $4,500 per year for in-state students and $7,000 per year for out-of-state students.

Learn more at UVA Student Financial Services.

UVA School of Architecture offers financial support to returning students in a number of ways, including departmental scholarship awards and research travel fellowships.
