Mert Kansu

Mert Kansu (he/him/his)

Vice Co-Chair
UVA MArch 2019
Architect, VMDO

Charlottesville, VA

mk8tr@virginia.edu

Member as of 2023

Mert uncovered his interest and passion for discovering new places, cities, and architecture during two summer-long camping trips around Europe in his childhood. He enjoys architecture for its ability to change how people feel and interact with each other and their surroundings. Believing that architecture and design can be inspired from anything around us, he enjoys pulling sources from art, photography, movies, popular culture, and daily experiences. Born, raised, and educated in Istanbul, Mert's training informed his respect for the social and cultural contexts of places as well as his prioritization of the buildability, feasibility, and usability of his projects. Mert became interested in sustainability and ecology during his MArch program at UVA. For his thesis research, he extensively studied coastal, urban, and resilient solutions that temper climatic disasters through energy production and community development.  Digesting the projects he works on by perceiving and presenting them as a story, he currently enjoys the inviting environment of Charlottesville and VMDO, where he works in the Higher Education studio. As the USA Country Reporter for the World Architecture Community, Mert shares his perspectives on design and American architecture with WAC's global audience. He participated in AIA Virginia's 2020 Emerging Leaders in Architecture program.

Landscape Designer, Waterstreet Studio
Charlottesville, VA

Member since 2024

Michelle Kahl graduated from the UVA Master of Landscape Architecture program in May 2024. She recognizes that transdisciplinary practice, like inclusivity, accepts that our individual tools are insufficient and are more impactful as part of a collective. Michelle's thesis work explored how the design of public landscapes could shift the sociocultural condition to embrace domesticity and self-care. As the Co-President of SALAD (Student Association of Landscape Architecture and Design), Michelle won a Jefferson Trust Grant to host an event called "Arrival on Grounds", a place-based ritual and celebration for embodied entry into the fall semester and UVA’s landscape. She partnered with artist collaborators Nocturnal Medicine to help incoming students address UVA’s ecological, climatic, historical, and cultural contexts. Michelle's design portfolio earned an ASLA Certificate of Merit in 2024 and Honors in the Category of Planning & Analysis. She held graduate internships with RePublic studio in Petaluma, California and the UVA Institute for Engagement & Negotiations. Michelle currently lives in Charlottesville, VA where she works as a landscape designer for Waterstreet Studio.

Peter Sikorsky developed an interest in architecture and landscape through long distance running, first along the Potomac, Rivanna, and Charles Rivers, and now, along Casco Bay. This curiosity found a spaciousness within the A-School and a form at the GSD. He is concerned with the role of precision in design to make legible our disciplines' value to a broad public; moreover, he's fascinated with the role of immutable mobiles in the production of architectural discourse. Peter works as a designer at the scale of the garden to that of land use planning; in his free time, he likes to cook, dance, hike, read, and formulate questions for pebbles and small rocks.
