UVA School of Architecture's Tashana Starks Receives 2026 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award

The University of Virginia has named Tashana Starks, Director of Advising and Academic Support in the School of Architecture, as the recipient of the 2026 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, one of the University's highest honors recognizing members of the UVA community whose lives reflect humility, integrity, and selfless service to others. The award was presented during UVA's Valedictory Exercises last May.

Presented annually at UVA to two graduating students and one non-student member of the University community, the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award honors those who embody the ideals of "generous and unselfish service to others." UVA is among approximately 70 colleges and universities that participate in the national Sullivan Awards program. 

For many students, faculty, and alumni of the School of Architecture, Starks has long exemplified those values. Since joining the School, she has become a trusted advisor, mentor, and advocate, helping students navigate academic challenges while fostering a sense of belonging and support. Colleagues describe her as an essential presence whose compassion and commitment have transformed countless student experiences. 

Starks' dedication is rooted in her own journey as a UVA transfer student who balanced work, academics, and personal challenges while earning her degree. That experience informs her approach to advising and her deep understanding of the obstacles students may face. Her impact has been felt across generations of School of Architecture students, many of whom credit her guidance and encouragement as instrumental to their success. 

Established in 1925 in memory of lawyer, businessman, and philanthropist Algernon Sydney Sullivan, the award honors individuals whose character and humanitarian spirit enrich the lives of those around them. Through her unwavering commitment to students and the broader University community, Starks demonstrates the award's enduring ideals. 

How has your own experience as a UVA transfer student shaped the way you support students today?

My experience as a UVA transfer student has given me firsthand insight into both the opportunities and challenges that come with transitioning into a new academic community. I remember what it felt like to navigate unfamiliar systems, build new connections, and find a sense of belonging. Those experiences have made me more intentional about creating a welcoming, supportive environment for students.

You've supported thousands of students at the School of Architecture. Is there a student interaction or moment that reminds you of why you do this work?

It is hard to define just one moment because every conversation is different. What brings me the most joy is simply hanging out with the students. Whether it's helping them navigate a challenge, celebrating a success, or just being someone who listens, those moments are what make this work so meaningful. Some of my favorite interactions are the quick, fly-by hallway conversations. They may only last a few minutes, but they are often filled with lots of laughter, genuine connection, and a chance to check in. Those small moments can make a big difference, and they are one of the many things I enjoy about being part of the A-School students' lives.

What do you hope students take away from their time at the School of Architecture, both academically and personally?

I hope students leave the A-School with more than just the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in their careers. Academically, I hope they gain confidence in their abilities, develop strong critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, and embrace lifelong learning and go out and redefine their fields! Personally, I hope students leave with the most meaningful relationships, a greater sense of themselves, and the confidence to take on new challenges. Most importantly, I want them to graduate knowing they are capable, resilient, and prepared to make a positive impact on the world. I also hope they always remember that UVA and the School of Architecture will forever be a second home. I am in awe of their accomplishments and so very proud of each and every student!!

If you could share one piece of advice to students who may be facing challenges or uncertainty, what would it be?

If I could share one piece of advice with students facing challenges or uncertainty, it would be this: Do not let setbacks define your future. Challenges are a natural part of learning and growth. Ask for help, and remember that you are never alone, we are here to support you during times that may feel uncertain. Most importantly, give yourself a lot of grace. 

College is a time of learning not only academically but also personally, and it is okay not to have everything figured out. Every obstacle is an opportunity to build resilience, gain perspective, and discover strengths you didn't know you had. Finally, believe in yourself. Keep moving forward one step at a time, and trust that your persistence and determination will lead you to opportunities you may not be able to see today.
