Pan-University Minor in Global Sustainability
How We Think About Sustainability in the Curriculum
The Global Sustainability Minor is grounded in an integrated understanding of sustainability, defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own. The program is guided by the “three E’s”: Environment, Economy + Policy, and Equity, recognizing that sustainable solutions must balance ecological health, economic systems, and social justice.
The Minor also establishes connections between different disciplines and prepares students to incorporate sustainable practices into their varied future careers. Students are taught to be creative collaborators who work together to accomplish real change through community engagement with sustainable projects in their communities and beyond.
Courses in the Minor emphasize the following core principles:
-
Systems Thinking: Students learn to approach sustainability challenges as interconnected systems, recognizing that environmental, social, and economic factors are complex and deeply intertwined. This holistic perspective encourages comprehensive, long-term problem-solving.
-
Engaged Citizenship: Coursework connects students with communities, enabling them to apply their knowledge in collaborative, real-world contexts. Students develop the skills to listen, partner, and co-create solutions with diverse stakeholders.
-
Innovation: Beyond foundational knowledge, students are encouraged to think creatively and test new ideas. Courses foster experimentation and integrative thinking, supporting the development of forward-looking solutions.
-
Research: A strong emphasis on research equips students to formulate critical questions, gather and analyze data, and draw informed conclusions—building a foundation for evidence-based decision-making.
-
Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Sustainability challenges demand multiple perspectives. Students engage with scientific, social, economic, technical, aesthetic and creative approaches, gaining the ability to communicate across disciplines and collaborate effectively with peers from diverse fields.
