"An earthquake too demolished a large part of Pompeii, a populous town in Campania." [ February 5, 62 AD]

The Annals of Tacitus, Book XV, chapter 22.

"All around us buildings are shaken....we are afraid, nay certain, that there will be a collapse" [August 25, 79 AD]

How did they rebuild after the 62 Earthquake?

  • Lie in disrepair?
  • Quick and dirty patching?
  • Major improvement of civic presence?

Components of the investigation:

  • Document all known potential damage events since 62.
  • Document the current and past states of the building.
  • Apply principles of engineering, construction, archaeology, or anything else to develop a construction sequence that best reconciles available evidence.

Look at the role of Phtogrammetry as a component in this inqury.
