National
map of wind zones indicates that most of Virginia is in Zone III (200 mph
winds), while the
rest of the state is in a hurricane-susceptible region within Zone II (160
mph winds). The planning district seems to be in Zone III, but is fairly
close to the line.
Table indicates that areas with 1-5 tornadoes per 1,000 sq. miles that are
also in Zone II have a moderate risk of tornadoes. In moderate risk areas, "shelter
should be considered for protection from high winds." Since this Zone
II area is also a hurricane-susceptible zone, "shelter is preferred method
of protection from high winds." In areas with 1-5 tornadoes per 1,000
sq. miles that are also in Zone III, there is a high risk of tornadoes. This
means that "shelter is preferred method of protection from high winds."
