Transportation by Taxi Service
For those residents living outside of the CTS bus service areas and who require more expeditious transportation to a grocery, medical appointment, or similar trip, some may choose to utilize taxi service available within the District. There are several companies which service this region, but most charge approximately $2.40 per mile, which can be an expensive option as a primary means of transportation. Some taxi companies provide a variable senior discount, but many do not. Some companies may be contracted by health care plans to provide reduced or free-of-cost transport to and from medical appointments. Contracted through Virginia Premier Health Plan, Inc., Yellow Cab/Airport Cab/Pace’s Taxi provides taxi service to Medicare clients within VPHP’s coverage area, which includes the City of Charlottesville, and Albemarle, Greene, and Louisa Counties. This service is provided at no cost to the passenger for medical-related trips if they are a Medicare client with VPHP coverage. This service must be scheduled 2 days (minimum) in advance of the medical appointment, so that the necessary paperwork can be filed and VPHP can schedule service with the contracted taxi company. Other services/discount programs such as these may be available within the region.
