Places of Worship

Places of worship are far more ubiquitous than medical facilities or libraries. These Places of Worship do provide locations where people can gather. Places of Worship are often open to community residents during times requiring emergency shelter or food. They are also often places of gathering for secular as well as religious activities such as health education, community dinners and civic programs. The Charlottesville local telephone directory and other web-based sources were used to locate Places of Worship in the Thomas Jefferson Planning District in order to determine if these facilities were in locations that were convenient and accessible to the aging population. Additional places of worship, which were not listed in the local telephone directory and other web based sources, may be present in the region. Indeed the sources used in this preliminary map included very few places of worship in Nelson County.

The map above positions the places of worship in the Thomas Jefferson Planning District and shows the approximate time required to travel by automobile to the nearest place of worship. Additional places of worship, which were not listed in the local telephone directory and other web based sources, may be present in the region. Therefore, the time required to travel to the nearest place of worship is only approximate. Because the map only displays places of worship located in the Thomas Jefferson Planning District, it does not account for people outside of the district. For example, people residing in Gum Spring may not have to travel over an hour to the nearest place of worship, as they may frequent a facility outside of the planning district.
