Grocery Stores and Convenience Stores
The availability of a safe food supply is important for the health and vitality of our older neighbors. Some of the daily needs can be found at a convenience store. Cost and choice considerations are addressed more often by larger supermarkets. Accessibility of these facilities to our senior neighbors is essential for good nutrition and health. It is likely that these facilities would be used more than once per week.
The Charlottesville local telephone directory and other web-based sources were used to locate grocery and convenience stores in the Thomas Jefferson Planning District in order to determine if these facilities were in locations that were convenient and accessible to the aging population. Major stores were identified as supermarkets or offering a wide range of grocery and home good. Convenience stores were identified as those offering specialized grocery goods, neighborhood in scale and limited home goods. Additional stores not listed in the local telephone directory and other web based sources, may be present in the region.

Mapping the total time for all person 65 years or older to travel to the nearest grocery or convenience store for each census block may assist JABA in identifying the locations in need of transportation assistance. For example, some of the areas with an aggregate eight-hour travel time to the nearest store may have a high population of persons 65 years or older, which have difficulty traveling to the store. Therefore, these are areas in which JABA could direct their services to assist these populations in need.
