Computing Accounts
All incoming students and faculty need the following computer accounts:
- University Email: Most students will already have an Email account through either Gmail or MSN, and have already been issued a ID in the abc1d format. This is usually setup before you arrive at the university, as part of your application and acceptance process.
Faculty will be given email accounts on either the Central Mail Service or the Eservices Exchange Email service when their university accounts are setup. Please see John Vigour at the Archtitecture help desk for details.
- University Eservices (Computer login, Home Directory, Netbadge): Your Eservices account provides access to myriad resources across the University, including login access to public computers in labs, classrooms, and libraries (including the School of Architecture), access to file storage servers, your personal Home Directory (see below), and Netbadge enabled services including Collab.
Eservices accounts are activated when you setup your permanent password through setting your security questions. The password for this account is the permanent password that you set or receive during that process.
Activate your Accounts (you must have your personal passphrase card from In-Person Identity Proofing, see below)
All accounts are provided by UVA ITS (Information Technology Services). Accounts are not provided by the Architecture School directly, but we can help you work through them. See ITS Computing Accounts for a description and information about all computing accounts at UVA.
User accounts at the University of Virginia will not be activated until the student or faculty member has gone through UVa's In-Person Identity Proofing at the University ID Office. This process includes getting your University ID Card, verifying your identity at the office, and getting your Passphrase Card. You then must go to the website listed on the card, provide your unique passphrase, and complete the process by creating identify questions and answers. This process is non-negotiable at UVA, and is required before proceeding to any other accounts or computer access at the university.
In person Identity Proofing is handled at the University ID office in the lower level of Observatory Hill Dining Hall. This process must be done prior to activation of any other accounts, including connecting a laptop computer to the UVA wireless network.
This process must be done in person, and cannot be done from home.
After you have received your passphrase card (comes with your University ID), you can go to the Personal Security Questions website to activate your accounts.
Home Directory (Eservices)
Home Directory is an account on the EServices domain for your University Home Directory and your personal WWW home page. With it you can store personal files and publish a personal Web page on the internet. For details, please see ITC's Documentation on the Home Directory.
Printing and Printer Charge Accounts
Network/Internet Access
Students and faculty may also wish to establish additional accounts for Secure Wireless and Off-Grounds Network access. Details on these accounts, as well as procedures for establishing them can be found at ITC's web pages.
