UVA Sustainability Symposium:
Climate Change and Health

Sunday, April 19 – Monday, April 20, 2009

University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia

This workshop is the third in a sustainability symposium series begun in 2004. This year, participants will initiate a dialogue concerning the linkages between the fields of climate change and health to investigate ways to foster greater connections at the academic, community and global scales. Through panel presentations and facilitated discussions, workshop participants will discuss emerging issues related to climate change and health within the fields of planning, landscape design, environmental science, public health, public policy, engineering, law and business. These sessions will seek to draw new linkages and uncover distinct opportunities for addressing issues in a comprehensive fashion.

Symposium Format and Focus

This two–part symposium will engage participants through panels and active–participant dialogue on climate change and health issues from the global, national, and local levels. Topics covered in the workshop will focus on water, food and chronic disease

April 19 will begin with an evening celebration in downtown Charlottesville, starting with a screening of the film UnNatural Causes: Place Matters and a series of short student films at the Charlottesville Community Design Center (CCDC). Participants will view the short films, participate in a facilitated discussion, then vote on student poster and video competition submissions while enjoying local cuisine and beverages.

On April 20, the all–day workshop with panel discussions and guest speaker presentations will be held in UVA’s Alumni Hall. Participants will engage in dialogue concerning their local, national and global roles as well as larger societal concerns and policy responses to climate change and health.

Outcomes from the workshop will inform UVA curricula development and new research, as well as build bridges between academia and local communities.

Registration

Intended Audience

The symposium is free to the public and welcomes the University of Virginia faculty, staff, students, and alumni, residents from Charlottesville and surrounding counties, local organizations and government officials. AICP Members attending the all–day workshop can earn Certificate Maintenance (CM) credits.

Past conferences have included stimulating dialogues amongst the community and the University. This approach continues a process begun by Thomas Jefferson in which the University each year invited in the community so that faculty and students could more broadly share their knowledge. Through facilitated dialogues participants will seek to uncover common concerns while sharing in the region's diverse sources of knowledge and insight.
