Program Description

Introduction

The University of Virginia International Studies Office and the School of Architecture are proud to offer the China Architecture/Culture program in affiliation with The Beijing Institute of Asian Studies based at Peking University in Beijing, China. Led by Dr. Huang, students will learn about Chinese architecture and culture and have the opportunity to meet professionals in the field. Students may have the opportunity of doing an internship in a Chinese or American–based firm in Beijing, Shanghai or Hong Kong after the program ends.

About the Program

The program has been offered at the University of Virginia since 1993 and is designed for students who study, or have an interest in architecture. Students study Chinese architecture and learn how Chinese history can be traced through its architecture. The year 2008 marks a significant change in the program as UVA works in affiliation with The Beijing Institute of Asian Studies to expend the content and length of the program. Students will spend a total of six weeks in China, with 4 weeks in Beijing and the last two weeks traveling to historical sites around China.

Beijing

Beijing has been the capital city of China since 13th century. Field trips in this program cover the major historic sites from imperial China: the Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Great Wall, Ming Tombs, the Temple of Heaven, etc. We will also investigate the modern construction in the city including the Fragrant Hill Hotel designed by I.M. Pei.

Faculty

Dr. Huang was educated both in China and US. Dr. Huang has practiced architectural design in China and is currently an associate professor of architectural history at the University of Virginia’s School of Architecture. He is one of the founders of the program.
