Academic Regulations

Procedures for course enrollment along with the schools deadlines for registration are outlined in the Undergraduate Record+ and the Graduate Record+.

adding courses

Students may add courses through the ISIS telephone system or ISIS online for two weeks after the first day of classes.

dropping courses

The deadline for dropping a course is two weeks after the first day of classes. The instructor’s permission is not required for dropping a course, but it is courteous to inform the instructor.

withdrawal

After the deadline for course withdrawl, a student may withdraw from a course by petitioning the instructor. Petition forms are available in the Student Services Office in 120A Campbell Hall. Please do not use a CLAS withdrawal form. The instructor will assign a grade of WP (withdrew passing) or WF (withdrew failing), which is recorded permanently on the student’s transcript. It does not affect the GPA. Withdrawals are permitted until two weeks before the last day of classes.

final registration

In order not to be dropped from all classes at the beginning of the semester, a student must “final register” through ISIS. This is to notify the University that the student has returned from break and plans to attend the classes for which he/she signed up.

pass/fail option

(Credit/No-Credit) Undergraduate students may take one pass/fail course per semester. Any course taken with this grading option must be counted as an Open Elective. Graduate students who take an undergraduate level course must use the pass/fail (CR/NC) option, and this course does not count as hours toward the degree.

auditing a course

Graduate and undergraduate students are allowed to audit University courses with the instructor’s approval. Each instructor will determine audit requirements. Students wishing to audit a course should obtain a Course Action Form from the Student Services Office to be signed by the instructor.

petitions

Students wishing to request any exception to a regulation should formally petition the faculty in writing (in the form of a letter to the chair of the student’s department). Students should submit the letter to the Student Services Office; a form is then attached to the letter, which is circulated to the chair, to the Associate Dean of Students, and to the Dean for comments and signatures. The petition and its outcome will be included in the student’s permanent file.

incomplete grades and no grade

A grade of IN (Incomplete) is not a valid final grade and becomes F ten days after the end of the examination period unless a student requests an extension and obtains approval using a form signed by the course instructor and approved by the Associate Dean for Students. Students with a written doctor’s medical excuse submitted to the Associate Dean for Students will receive an IN for work remaining at the end of the semester for which that excuse is applicable. An approved grade of IN converts to F four weeks after the end of the examination period. Thesis credit deadlines are handled on a case by case basis between the student and the thesis chair. Instructors are not authorized to extend the time for completion of course work without the Associate Dean for Student’s approval. Forms for securing extensions are available in the Student Services Office, 120-A Campbell Hall.

NGs (no grades) compute as Fs and remain on the transcript for one semester unless corrected.

restricted or full courses

Students with special permission from the instructor to enroll in a course, over-riding enrollment or other restrictions, must submit a Course Action Form signed by the professor of the class to the Student Services Office (120 Campbell Hall), where it will be entered via ISIS.
