Kalia Ellis

I am a first year graduate student in the Urban and Environmental Planning program at UVA. I am an aspiring transportation planner and also plan to earn a certificate in Historic Preservation while in the planning program. I was born in Okinawa, Japan, but spent the last six years in Williamsburg, VA. I attended undergraduate school at Hampton University, which will always be my “home by the sea”, and graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. My desire to pursue urban and environmental planning grew from my interest in urban design. In addition, my experience interning with the City of Newport News and HDR, Inc. has furthered my interest in transportation planning. Currently, I am part of the Student Planner’s Association and continue doing research in public health and planning with the Botchwey Research Group while studying at UVA.

Amy Finstein

My name is Amy Finstein and I am a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Architectural History. Originally from Boston, I came to UVA for the opportunity to study closely with the leading scholars in my field, and for the interdisciplinary opportunities offered by the School of Architecture. While completing my coursework I took classes in every department of the School of Architecture, and my research similarly explores facets of architectural and urban history, landscape design, and the impact of the automobile on our built environment.

I'm a first-year MLA student in the three-year program, originally from Wisconsin and most recently from the California Bay Area. Before arriving at UVA, I studied English at Carleton College and worked as an ESL instructor, 6-8 grade music teacher, graphic designer, technical writer, and writer for an urban planning / landscape architecture firm in Berkeley, California. I'm currently involved in GALA (Graduate Architecture and Landscape Architecture student group) and I would be happy to handle any prospective studentís questions about the application process, in particular.

Anju Rathi

I am Anjushree Rathi, a first year international student in the M.Arch Path-B program. I come from India and I completed 5+ years undergraduate studies from the School of Architecture, CEPT, Ahmedabad, India. As I am new to this country and to this city I am still taking some time to get used to these new surroundings. Currently, I am the only student in the Architecture School who is from India. As a representative of the School, I hope I can be of help to other international students, especially other Indian students considering coming to the University of Virginia.
