Campbell Hall Exhibit Structure

This web site documents the design and construction of a structure for exhibiting architectural models as part of the 1998 NAAB accreditation exhibit at the University of Virginia.

Rather than supporting models on a firm base, the structure suspends them between prestressed cables above and heavy ballast below. Models hang in the balance between opposing forces in tension.

The structure was designed and built by Kirk Martini and graduate student David Godfroy, with the invaluable assistance of shop manager David Williams. Kevin Crosby and Andy Grote also assisted with assembly, as did Celia Liu, who took most of the construction photographs.
