DESIGN COMPETITION:
School of Architecture Studio Materials Reuse Center

January 14, 2005

Introduction:

Each year, dozens of trash bins full of useable model materials are thrown out, while students needlessly spend money on new ones. These supplies are expensive, difficult to store and their disposal needlessly contributes to the local landfill. There is an evident lack of proper space in the Architecture School to store perfectly re-usable materials like basswood, plywood, metals, Plexiglas, drawing paper, art supplies, drafting instruments, etc.

The UVA CSI+ – Student chapter is committed to promoting sustainability in all aspects of design and construction. We see the problem that the A-school faces at dealing with studio waste as an opportunity for action.

We are sponsoring a group of students to design and build a piece of cabinetry / furniture that will house a reuse center for the studios. The presence of such fixture will facilitate the re-circulation of used or extra materials that students may accumulate during the school year.

The Studio-Reuse center will benefit all students in the architecture school by reducing the cost of yearly supplies. It will benefit the school’s Public Works Office by making it easier to sort out left over supplies and it will significantly reduce the amount of waste coming from Campbell Hall.

We have received $1750 from the UVA Parents Fund to fund the construction of this project.
