University of Virginia: School of Architecture

Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Architectural History Louis Nelson and his students recently returned from The Falmouth Field School in Historic Preservation, an annual summer study abroad program in Falmouth, Jamaica. Managed in partnership with Falmouth Heritage Renewal, the Field School provides a unique hands–on learning experience in historic building documentation and renovation in the culturally diverse and economically complex context of the Caribbean. Students learn a variety of skills, ranging from the conservation of historic brick masonry and timber framing, to recording threatened buildings through detailed measured drawings, to learning how to “read” the historic fabric of a building.
