University of Virginia: School of Architecture

The Summer Design Institute (SDI) introduced students from non–design backgrounds to habits of thinking and making that are fundamental to the creative design process. SDI projects focused on the threshold between architecture and landscape architecture, the intersection of inside and outside. Exploration during SDI 2010 took place at Campbell Hall, the Academical Village, and the Dell. Each of these places afforded different opportunities for exploring the making of place and the choreography of spatial sequences through the arrangement of figures (objects, bounded spaces), fields (extensive surfaces, contextual grounds) and flows (human movement, light/shadow, temperature changes, etc).
