This symposium aims to explore the conceptual and practical challenges of bringing a broader geographic view of the Mediterranean to the study of objects, buildings, and landscapes, with the hope of opening new avenues for future research. The symposium will bring together prominent scholars whose work seeks to reshape the way the art and architectural history of the Mediterranean is written. While specializing in different regions and periods, from Islamic Spain to Norman Sicily, the Ottoman Empire, and modern Egypt, the speakers share the ambition of expanding their discussion across traditional boundaries.
“Sea Crossings” is organized by Department of Architectural History faculty Cammy Brothers, Sheila Crane, and Lisa Reilly; and is sponsored by the Office of the Vice Provost for International Programs.
