Velocity - Affordable Housing Research & Feasibility Plan for Memphis, Tennessee

12 weeks

The 2010 Census identified Memphis as the most impoverished of all U.S. metropolitan areas with populations greater than 1 million.  This research project identifies several causes of economic disparity throughout Memphis, how this problem affects the local affordable housing landscape, and how an agency might intervene using affordable housing development as an avenue for community and city-wide change.

Specifically focusing on the rental population, the research delves into what is currently going on in the public, private, and non-profit housing development sectors in Memphis and identifies where gaps in supply and demand exist both spatially and by economic threshold.  The investigation of several organizations as case studies for best practice in housing implementation throughout Memphis and Nashville then introduces a feasibility and business plan for a similar organization to emerge in Memphis with a solid foundation for understanding both the local demographics and hte subsequent design needs.
