City Market | Urban Nexus

8 weeks

This proposal locates a City Market on the IX site that will be the hub of a linear market district and urban trail network extending from the Downtown Mall to Pollucks Run and Moore's Creek.  The market is paired with other social and ecological programs, including storm water treatment, as well as an urban trail and campground in order to create public space that restores previous ecological functions of a stream corridor, and expands Charlottesville's alternative transportation network.  The Market will perform as public space taht resonates with Richard Sennett's definition of places with "weak borders rather than strong walls" that can engage unanticipated uses, seams where differences are encountered.
