Roots of Music School

12 weeks

As the design of a center for an after-school marching band in New Orleans, the Roots of Music School seeks to address urban issues within Louis Armstrong Park as well as a programmatic need for both spaces of learning and marching. The design response focuses on creating a new public street edge facing the French Quarter that continues through the park. Spaces belonging to the school (classrooms, practice rooms and marching spaces) are elevated above the street for safety and put on display for the public to watch and listen to the marching band. Classrooms and practice rooms are organized along a long circulation spine that doubles as space for storage of instruments. The large indoor marching space along the street opens onto a raised marching ground that slopes back down to the level of the park allowing the band to march through the park and out into the city.
