Personal Statement

Karolin Moellmann joint the faculty of the Architecture School as lecturer in January 2009. Since then she is teaching undergraduate design studios on a second and third year level as well as graduate/undergraduate seminars. Her research interests are to conceive and design constructed form in its operational, systematic, material and social context across scales. Karolin Moellmann understands teaching as applied research. Within her seminars and studios she encourages critical thinking, questioning, reflection along with the process of making as key issues to enable students setting up a personal design thesis and to prepare them for the temporary and coming challenges in their profession. Within her field of research she is currently working on: “adaptive reuse at Morven”, in which context she was leading a faculty research seminar in fall 2010 and will be teaching a design built seminar “Living Barns, regenerative design at Morven” at the Summer Institute at Morven, Charlottesville in May/June 2011. Beyond her personal research Karolin Moellmann is acting as research assistant for the deans office were she is working on various projects including the generation of a database for funding opportunities, directing grant proposals and curricular investigation. Additionally she is serving in the architecture department graduate admissions committee and is advising students on an undergraduate level. Karolin Moellmann is founder of the architecture and urban research and design group “Avig Raeta” based in Berlin, Germany. Established in 2008 the group is investigating along urban renewal strategies for the European City. Avig Raeta achieved the first prize in the Europan 9 competition with the urban design proposal “Odda Lace”– the work has been published in various architecture magazines and journals. Karolin Moellmann has practiced as a designer and project architect in award winning Berlin, Germany based architecture offices of ‘Sauerbruch Hutton’ and ‚Bernrieder Sieweke-Lagemann’, working on a range of interior, residential, institutional, commercial, and urban projects. Karolin Moellmann is licensed architect at the architecture association Berlin, Germany //Architektenkammer Berlin// since 2009. She received her architecture education at the Technical University in Dresden, Germany and at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden; she holds a Dipl.Ing. degree from Technical University in Dresden, Germany. Before her academic education she achieved a certificate of apprenticeship as carpenter after a two-year practical training in wood fabrication, construction and design.
