Personal Statement

Fraser Neiman is Director of Archaeology at Monticello. His courses in historical archaeology, landscape archaeology, and the archaeology of Atlantic slavery emphasize the use of archaeological analytical methods, and archaeological and architectural data to solve problems in the economic and social history of the early-modern Atlantic. Neiman's research interests span archaeological theory, quantitative data analysis, and the archaeology and architecture of slave societies of the North American South and the Caribbean. Current research projects include the Digital Archaeological Archive of Comparative Slavery (www.daacs.org) and the Monticello Plantation Archaeological Survey (http://www.monticello.org/site/research-and-collections/monticello-archaeology).
