Structures of Freedom: Seth McDowell

Dr. Guoping Huang, Assistant Professor of Urban and Environmental Planning, continues to develop strategies and tools that will allow developers and city planners with new ways of visualizing the impacts of future building development. In July, Huang presented a 3D model of the city of Charlottesville to the PLACE Design Task Force that uses LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology, an airborne sensing method that allows for the depiction of the city’s topography, along with its built infrastructure. The work will help decision-makers better understand what the city’s future might look like, under current regulations or future form-based code.
