Professor Presents Research on Gender and Town Planning

James M. Page Professor and Chair of the Department of Urban and Environmental Planning, Daphne Spain, presented a paper at the ?Town Planning and Gender: A Necessary Viewpoint for All? conference held in Barcelona, Spain at the end of April, 2005. Spain?s, paper, ?The Importance of Urban Gendered Spaces For the Public Realm,? examines the historical relationship of Western women?s participation in public discourse and their physical separation from men in both rural and urban settings. Spain concludes that a separate space for urban women, similar to a neighborhood gathering place, can positively contribute to their participation in public discourse and politics.
