Alumna’s Book Wins 2009 AIA Collaboration Honor Award

Jennifer Masengarb (MAH?00) has recently authored a second school-based architecture curriculum at the Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF). As the first high school architecture textbook in the nation, "The Architecture Handbook: A Student Guide to Understanding Buildings" has been employed in broad applications in classrooms across the country.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has named the "Handbook" the winner of the 2009 Honor Award for Collaborative Achievement. Masengarb’s 2005 book with CAF for children in grades K-8, "Schoolyards to Skylines: Teaching with Chicago’s Amazing Architecture" won that year’s award.

A unique partnership between CAF, 40 local architects, Chicago Public School high school teachers and students, career and technical education officials, and local universities has led to curriculum reform in the country’s third-largest school district, and now in 150 high schools across 39 states and 9 countries.
