response to Evans article
"Drawing in architecture is not done after nature, but prior to construction; it is not so much produced by reflection on the reality outside the drawing, as productive of a reality that will end up outside the drawing."
If there is one thing we learned in design school it is that design is derived from the site. One should not be able to pick up a design and place it somewhere else. Instead, the local ecology, geology, soil, topography, microclimate, culture...etc, is the reality that exists "outside the drawing" and "outside the design". I think Evans focuses too much on the destinction between the paper drawing and the built form of a building. The design is not as detached from its medium when one considers the site as the medium and inspiration for form.
