WHAT'S THE FLUX?

Assembled in our new studio space, we had the pleasure of hosting Jim Crutchfield, Former Research Professor at the Santa Fe Institute and Professor of Physics at the University of California, Davis. www.santafe.edu/~chaos

In light of our objective of understanding the city as a complex web of networks and systems, Jim acquainted us with various scientific attempts to understand these phenomena. I will try to reiterate his lecture, and convey the discussion that ensued.

In order for a pattern to be produced in nature, there is an agent which scientists term flux. Flux is the unbalance, which impels a system to seek equilibrium.

In the natural world, systems that produce patterns move between being completely predictable and completely random. Deterministic Chaos is the study that explores the following question: in a system that obeys strict rules, how can chaos ensue? As discovered by the mathematician Henri Poincaré in 1892, there are mechanisms in nature that actively provoke randomness. For this reason, very few natural systems can be described or anticipated using mathematical formulas. Despite the chaos within systems and within their interactions, the world works, it is somehow structured.

Can we not make the same argument in regard to the city? We begin the design process by observing. We attempt to understand the structure of the inner workings of Venice by disbanding it, and understanding the systems individually. The sensitivity to and the discovery of systems is a process. The complex web is overwhelming. In his account of flying above a rain forest, Caude Levi-Strauss writing TristeTropiques (1955), described the vegetation of the forest as bubbles of growth, or masses upon the earth. In penetrating the forest, however, Levi-Strauss depicted the revelation of a complex layering of natural systems and patterns. Similarly, in Venice, we begin to break down, or separate out, the city’s systems in order to understand them first on a basic, operating level. We distinguish the network of canals from the network for postal delivery, from the flushing of the tides. We use as many representations as possible, i.e sketching, modeling, CADD, GIS mapping, to gain the richest possible picture of the city. Perhaps after breaking the city down in such a manner, we can then determine where to insinuate change or flux, in order to maximize desired impact.

However, what can be said about the mechanisms of randomness? At first glance, they would appear to be the enemy of the designer. Are they the reason architects so infrequently revisit their creations, lest they be proven insufficient? Agents of randomness make it difficult for us to monitor interactions and to determine cause and effect. However, these same glitches enrich cities, and make them interesting. Take for instance the example of the wellheads of Venice, placed in public space for infrastructural reasons, but whose form enriches the public spaces of Venice and provides a spatial and architectural focus to the campo. In design, how do we prepare for these glitches- how do we welcome them?

Prior to Jim’s talk, our group convened with the aim of stating and solidifying our stance on the issues that the city of Venice faces. We began by recognizing these issues, and then we established the beginning of an attitude towards procedure. The summary of this meeting is posted on the weblog. The initial manifesto will serve as a continuously negotiable framework for a studio disposition and will express the degree to which we concur. It is posted so that the community, both local and abroad, will comment, discuss, edit, and constructively critique, as we as individuals begin our design endeavors.
