The building process for the Learning Barge began during the spring semester of 2007. Students completed construction of the armature wall and the bathroom enclosure, as well as designed the water filtration and collection systems.

Construction continued in spring of 2008 with Phase Two, during which the remaining pieces off-site pieces were constructed.

Phase Three, on-site construction, is currently taking place in Norfolk, Virginia. The expected completion date of the Learning Barge is September, 2009.
