Welcome to the Insight Lab

Building and using tools to "see"

The Insight Lab is the School of Architecture's Advanced Technology Research lab, with a specific focus on computation, visualization and simulation of the built environment.

Founded in 2009 under an Innovation Grant by the Office of the Vice President for Research, the Lab sponsors and develops work across a range of design informatics and applied information and visualization technologies. The lab serves as a hub for faculty and student research activity, and a space for multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary collaboration, at both the individual and institutional scales.

The Insight Lab is located within the Shure Studio in the University of Virginia School of Architecture, on the second floor, directly adjacent to the main entrance to Campbell Hall.

The lab as a 'space' brings together faculty and students across the university in an open and collaborative environment to pursue individual and sponsored research. The lab's environment is designed to encourage and facilitate multiple activities in a shared and dynamic space, with both traditional media and the most advanced technologies available to the school. It is our goal to bring together diverse disciplines, challenges, and tools in an environment that fosters serendipitous collaboration and the informal sharing of ideas that lead to the real insights that transform our professional disciplines and our impacts upon the world.

The lab as a 'knowledge center' provides expertise in Digital and Computational Design Media, Visualization and Information Design, Design Analytics, Simulation and Performance Modeling, Prototyping and Fabrication, Digital Collaboration, and virtually any other form of applied information technology brought to bear on the disciplines of design and the built environment.

Equipped with state-of-the-art computer workstations, the Sandbox cluster of new and experimental software, several SMART Board interactive screens, a full-wall traditional whiteboard lounge, flexible conference, teaching and research spaces, and the multi-touch SMART Table, the Lab is a testing ground for the newest technologies and their most advanced and innovative applications.
