Open Faculty Positions
Assistant or Associate Professor, Dept. of Architecture
Review of applications is in progress.
The Department of Architecture in the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia invites applications for two full–time tenure–track positions. Selected candidates will join the tenure–track at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor depending on previous experience.
Located in a pre–eminent public institution, the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia includes top ranked departments in architecture, architectural history, landscape architecture, and urban and environmental planning. Nationally recognized faculty and highly competitive students create a dynamic scholarly community dedicated to teaching and interdisciplinary research. The School is continuously engaged in extrapolating Jefferson’s advocacy for education and citizenship into the contemporary built environment.
The Architecture Department is committed to advancing knowledge in the processes leading to the practice of Architecture through design pedagogies that encompass four areas of research:
- The exploration of innovation in design processes and practices in the public realm
- The interdependence of cultural forces, ecological processes, and ethical concerns
- The relationship between architectural resultant form and construction methodologies
- The implications of emerging technologies for the design of structures, sites and system
Following in the tradition of the faculty of the School, we seek excellent designers with a strong, thoughtful practice explicitly connected to a design research agenda to teach: design studios, required lecture courses in the core curriculum, and elective seminars in the candidate’s area of expertise. Beyond excellence in design, we seek individuals with a high level of theoretical discourse based on explorations in material research, structural concepts, sustainable design and/or large–scale integration of programs and sites. We are interested in candidates both radically grounded in visceral practices while easily involved in the currencies of innovative digital representation and fabrication.
Qualifications: Terminal professional degree required; professional license and/or Ph.D. preferred. Evidence of prior studio teaching experience is recommended.
Compensation for the position is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Review of applications will begin by November 17, 2011, although the review process will continue until the position is filled.
Application Process: Materials must be submitted to http://jobs.virginia.edu; search posting # 0608731 or 0608733.
Candidates should submit: 1) a curriculum vitae; 2) Cover letter; 3) a list of three references with contact information for those references (note your professional relationship to each of your references); 4) Statement of teaching philosophy and experience including a short description of courses you could teach; 5) Statement of research interests; 6) and a select digital portfolio. These materials should be in .pdf format.
