Kay Slaughter has spent her legal career at the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) in Charlottesville, where she has worked on a wide range of environmental, transportation and land use issues. SELC is a regional environmental organization working in six southeastern states and focusing on issues related to land and community, air and water pollution, wetlands protection, and public lands conservation.

Kay has been involved in legislation, regulatory work, litigation, and policy reform in Virginia. She also served on Charlottesville’s City Council from 1990 to 1998, and as Charlottesville Mayor, 1996-98.
During her tenure on Council, she served on a number of other regional boards, including the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission and the Metropolitan Planning Organization. She is a graduate of the Virginia Natural Resources Leadership Institute of the Institute for Environmental Negotiation. She currently is a member of the Charlottesville Council on Environmental Sustainability, convened by the Mayor of Charlottesville.

She has taught the course on Land, Law and Environment since 2003.
