JOSE ATIENZA joined the faculty in 2007 and is a design studio instructor. His studios, professional work, and personal research focus on the operative intersections between the constructed and the native through the instrumentalization of data flows into adaptive, specific, and responsive form. Through rigorous investigation of local and global processes and systems, the architectural project materializes at the fluent seams between the inherent and the invented - defining emergent sustaining relationships between ecology, capital, and culture.

Mr. Atienza is a founding partner of AWAKE, an architecture and design collaboration with Bradley Walters and Jennifer Akerman.

He is also a senior designer at William McDonough + Partners where he is the lead designer for ‘Isola’, an office building in Milan, Italy and ‘Greenbridge’, which was featured in the National Building Museum’s ‘The Green House’ traveling exhibit and will be the first LEED™ Gold mixed-use residential and commercial building in North Carolina. He has also designed ‘FLOW House,’ which was commissioned by the Make It Right Foundation and will be a LEED™ Platinum prototype duplex house for displaced residents of the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans .

In collaboration with project teams, Mr. Atienza’s work has been recognized with numerous awards and has been published and exhibited through various media and institutions including Architectural Record, A+D, Metropolis magazine, the Plan, the Chicago Athenaeum, the National Building Museum, the Morris Museum, Virginia Center for Architecture, and the Contemporary Arts Center NOLA. His built work includes the Abbe Science Center, which won highest honors from both the Pennsylvania and New Jersey chapters of the AIA and Slip-scape:the BD Campus Center - both completed while an associate at Hillier Architecture.

Mr. Atienza earned his Masters in Architecture from Princeton University and his undergraduate degree from UVA.
