Money Point Revitalization Plan

February 2004 to October 2006
Winner of the 2007 Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA)/Places Award. Working in cooperative partnership with over 90 representatives from agencies, industrial landowners and other key community interests, this effort intended to reduce risks to human and ecological health, enhance conservation and recreation, and improve viability for shoreline properties of Money Point in Chesapeake, VA.

Community-Based Collaboratives Research Consortium

Begun 1999
Initiated the Community-Based Collaboratives Research Consortium (cbcrc.org), with over 400 members representing 18 countries, including publication as lead author of Collaboration: A Guide for Environmental Advocates, working with environmental advocates and NGO?s The Wilderness Society and the National Audubon Society.

Seaside Strategy, Eastern Shore

Begun 10/06
Currently facilitating a group of university and federal agency researchers, state agency regulators, environmentalists, and local government representatives who are developing a consensus strategy over management of the vulnerable United Nations ?Man and the Biosphere Reserve? Eastern Shore seaside.

Abrams/Opequon TMDL Implementation Plan

2005 - 2006
Provided facilitation assistance to the Abrams/Opequon TMDL Implementation Steering Committee in Winchester and Frederick County (Virginia), a partnership with Virginia Tech and West Virginia University.

Central Chemical Superfund Redevelopment Project

2003-2004
Lead facilitator for the Central Chemical Superfund Redevelopment Project (Hagerstown, MD), established as an eight-month, community-based reuse planning process involving a community/agency Land Use Committee that met nine times and interacted with the larger community during a series of three public meetings before reaching full consensus.

Virginia Natural Resources Leadership Institute

1999 - ongoing
co-founder and core faculty member of the Virginia Natural Resources Leadership Institute, whose goals are to create a leadership network of people: * Who are engaged in working with Virginia's natural resources at all levels, from the scientific to the policy levels; * Who are drawn from all sectors of activity - local, state, and federal government, elected officials, industry and private small businesses, academia, civic organizations, nonprofit environmental organizations, and individual citizen activists; * Who will earn each other's trust while respecting each others different perspectives; * Who will be able to call on each other over the years for assistance and ideas; and * Who will have the leadership skills needed to engage in collaborative problem solving around environmental issues, to move beyond conflict, and to find creative solutions.

Southern Tobacco Communities Project

1994 - 2001
Spent seven years mediating national and regional discussions among tobacco farm and public health leaders, resulting in a series of agreements including over $2 billion in funding for tobacco farm regions and tobacco control (public health) efforts.
