Studio Space

Audio Systems

Earphones or headsets are required for all audio systems in the studios. This is a regulation agreed upon by faculty and students. Listening to music is generally not allowed during studio class times.

Building Regulations

Use of the building and its equipment is, in part, an opportunity made possible by the people of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Policies at Campbell Hall are intended to protect and preserve the building and its occupants. Please note the following particulars:

  • Spray-painting should be done only in the woodshop or 3rd floor work terrace. DO NOT spray paint on any surface other than the spray tables on the terrace.
  • The use of plaster is only permitted with a signed Plaster Procedures Agreement with the Facilities Manager.
  • Install a cutting surface on your student desk. Do not use knives or cutters directly on classroom desks and tables. A & A Supply sells cutting mats.
  • Keep food, drink and excessive physical force away from computers, copiers and photo equipment. If you damage it, no one, not even you, will be able to use it.
  • Be considerate of the furniture in the classrooms.
  • State Law permits smoking only on the exterior terraces. Please use the containers provided for waste. Do not throw cigarette butts on the roof, they will burn small holes in the water proofing material used on the roof.
  • Animals are prohibited from entering the building.
  • Bicycles must be stored in the outside racks provided. No motorized vehicles are allowed on the terraces.
  • Access to the roof is prohibited because of the fragile nature of the roofing membrane.
  • Cell phones should not be used in studios or during classes.
  • If you have any questions about equipment or building policy, or if you would like to advise us of repairs and improvements, please contact the Facilities Manager.
Desk

Every studio student is assigned a desk, stool, and lockable drawer at the beginning of each semester. Students may add desktop shelving, which does not use masonry blocks and is not higher than 66" above the floor. There are many small cabinet units in building-supply stores. Install a cutting surface on your student desk. Do not use knives or cutters directly on classroom desks and tables. A & A supply sells cutting mats. Students are responsible for proper use of loaned equipment and furniture; we request that you report any defects. Workspaces must be cleared completely at the end of the semester; remaining items will be discarded. Please remember that items on the floor are at risk for damage or loss.

Electricity & Ethernet

Every studio space is supplied with ethernet and electricity. There are not enough sockets for every student to have his or her own, so a power strip is recommended. However, a power strip must be plugged into a socket and not another power strip or extension cord. Extension cords are not allowed as they pose a serious fire hazard. Only network cords, under a trip cover, are allowed to cross open floor. Power cords and floor outlets must be completely under the desk.

Flat File

Every student in studio is allowed one lockable flat file. The flat file is used to store drawings, small models, and is large enough to hold a drafting board for storage over the summer. The name of the student along with the expected semester of graduation must be taped to the exterior of the drawer, if not, the lock will be cut off and the items within the drawer removed.

Housekeeping

Custodial personnel are instructed to remove material only from trash receptacles and from the floor; anything left on the floor, other than a locker box, will be discarded. Trash accumulated on top of desks will not be removed but will pose a fire hazard and reduce the available workspace. Trash should be put into the trash cans immediately; it is scheduled for pickup every weekday. Materials too bulky for cans will be removed on the same schedule if left clearly marked as trash and left by the elevator doors. Most custodial staff have worked in the School of Architecture for years and understand your needs. Please help them by cleaning your own spills and “post-charrette” debris with the broom and dustpan provided on each floor.

Injury

The Emergency Room of U.Va. Hospital on Jefferson Park Avenue is open 24 hours a day. If you are unable to get there, dial 9+911 for the Rescue Squad. Give your location as Campbell Hall at Rugby and Culbreth Roads. The most frequent injury is a hand cut. To stop bleeding, apply pressure and keep hand elevated; go to Student Health Services for treatment. First-Aid Kits are available on each studio floor by the elevator and in the woodshop.

Personal Safety

Women and men are urged to exercise caution when leaving Campbell Hall after dark. If you cannot find someone to walk with you, call the University Escort Service at 9+964-6400, or the Police Department at 9+911 in an emergency. If you are working into the early morning hours and feel you are too tired to drive home, don’t risk personal injury. Call the University Escort Service or make arrangements with a friend.

Security

Neither the University nor the School is insured against the loss of students’ personal property. Valuable items should be stored in locked drawers. Campbell Hall is secured after hours with card-swipe door locks. Remember, building security depends on safeguarding access. Never prop exterior doors open.

Fire

While Campbell Hall is basically made of fire-retardant construction, design studios are full of flammable materials. Campbell Hall is equipped with smoke detector alarms but not a general sprinkler system. Everyone should be familiar with the location of fire extinguishers and report any that are missing or non-operational. Locate exit routes, and in case of alarm, leave the building immediately. On the preventive side, do not allow trash and debris to accumulate. Never use equipment such as torches or soldering irons in the building.

Handicapped Accessibility

Campbell Hall is accessible to physically disabled students. Students needing special assistance with programs or services should contact Associate Dean of Students Ellen Cathey (982.4567). Handicapped entrances are located at the 2nd Floor main Entrance and at the 1st floor back Entrance (near the woodshop).

Parking & Transportation

Students may purchase parking permits for the “Blue Lot” near U-Hall. Buses run regularly from the lot to all parts of the University. Campbell Hall is a ten-minute walk from U-Hall. The A-9 parking lot near Campbell Hall is a “Green Lot” and is more expensive. It is usually sold out. There is also a school bicycle for errands that can be borrowed through Dick Smith, Room 121.

trash disposal & recycling

Studio space is very limited and can quickly fill up with flammable and hazardous materials. Therefore, it is very important to properly dispose of all unwanted material. Throughout studios there are different types of containers for different forms of trash.

Recycling: There are three different types of recycling bins along with normal trash cans which are gray and circular.

Red circular cans are for white paper only.

Yes
  • printer and copy paper
  • blue lined notebook paper
  • arches board
No
  • copier paper ream wrappers
  • tissues, paper towels, napkins
  • trace paper or Mylar
  • carbon paper
  • Anything with adhesive or gloss on it

Yellow circular cans are for mixed paper.

Yes
  • dyed paper (construction)
  • envelopes
  • non-corrugated cardboard
  • paper bags
  • newspaper and magazines
  • trace paper
No
  • copier paper ream wrappers
  • tissues, paper towels, napkins
  • Mylar
  • carbon paper
  • any type of plastic

Lidded rectangular cans are for cans, plastic bottles, and glass.

Cardboard recycling is located outside of woodshop.

Exacto blades and batteries are not permitted for disposal in normal trash cans. They will either leak hazardous material or seriously injure those handling the trash. On the third and fourth floors of Campbell Hall there are designated containers for the disposal of batteries and Exacto blades.

alcohol policy

The University permits consumption of alcoholic beverages by persons aged 21 only at social functions sponsored by the School. For such functions prior approval from the Dean of Students of the University is required. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in studios at all times. Under no circumstances may those who are under 21 years of age possess or consume alcoholic beverages on University property.
