PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE
9th Street SE to the Anacostia River

11th Street to 12th Street

1903
Between 11th and 12th Streets SE, Pennsylvania Avenue remained predominantly residential in character. This block relates most closely to the 900 and 1000 blocks in the direction of the Capitol than the adjacent blocks on the east leading to the Anacostia River.

1954
The southern face of this block was devoid of earlier buildings at mid-century.  A small amount of infill construction completed the span of structures on the north side between 12th and 13th Streets, SE.

1998
Maintenance is currently an issue for the south side of the 1100 block, which is anchored by a liquor store. Alterations to facades, such as those made to the liquor store, detract from the street’s image. On that building, the second story retains window hoods and small scrolled brackets hinting of a vernacular Italianate heritage.  However, the street-level storefront offers uniform brick faces on either side, segmented by garage doors. A modern CVS Pharmacy, whose corner lot borders the northern side of Pennsylvania, disrupts the established rhythm of corridor setbacks by employing a lower height and a large setback. Such contemporary encroachment into the historic fabric of the street emerges with greater frequency moving eastward along the corridor.

Note the brackets and window hoods on the liquor store's
second story, in contrast to the garage doors at street level.

These rehabilitated structures on the south side order the block.
