MASSACHUSETTS AVENUE
Union Station to Lincoln Park
6th to 8th Streets NE

Sanborn, 1904 Today Cross Section
6th to 7th St, North Block 7th to 8th St, South Block

These blocks function as the transition between the mixed-use buildings of the previous blocks and the residential character of the succeeding blocks. This pattern of development was apparent in the 1904 maps, which reveal a mix of row houses and larger lot development. Today, a five-story apartment building and 2-3 story row houses occupy the block from 6th to 7th Streets. The Capitol Hill Hospital extends the entire length of the north side of the block from 7th to 8th Streets. At four storie s tall, the Capitol Hill Hospital’s scale is slightly larger than the modest two or three-story row houses across the Avenue, yet offers a U-shaped façade that recedes from the street.
