The 1500 block is characterized by the Embassy of Tunisia on the northern side and a large high-density apartment building on the southern side of the avenue.
The 1400 block introduces a parking lot, underpass, and retaining wall into the streetscape. The National Housing Center, which is owned by the National Association of Home Builders, is located on the southern side of the Avenue. This structure r
eplaces the Annie A. Cole residences at 1400-1402 Massachusetts Avenue, which were demolished in 1971. The structure was built in 1874 by owner-architect Peter Lauritzen, and added to in 1888 by Alfred Mullett. A mansard roof, matching trapezoida
l plan, and ornamental use of brick unified the original structure and addition. The small triangular-shaped site afforded the opportunity to build bays, porches, and other projections, which incited public dispute about the degree to which they could be
extended into public space.
